Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions

ARE ORCHIDS HARD TO GROW?

No, not if you have the right conditions. Buying the right orchid for your conditions is a key to success.

DO I NEED A GREENHOUSE?

No,not at all. You can grow orchids on windowsills or under lights. The proper amount and kind of light is important though.

WHAT’S THE BEST ORCHID FOR GROWING IN THE HOME?

The phalaenopsis or “moth orchid” is readily available and is one of the best for home growers. Phalaenopsis orchids like the same conditions African violets prefer and also what is comfortable for humans. A slightly shaded south window, or an east or west window is best. A second choice for the home grower is the paphiopedilum or “slipper orchid.”

WHAT IS THE BEST POTTING MATERIAL?

It depends on the type of orchid you are growing. Generally, Little Brook Orchids recommends a bark based potting medium for all epiphytic orchids. However, growers have had success with a variety of growing media. Watering and fertilizing may have to be adjusted depending on the medium used.

WHEN SHOULD I REPOT?

The best time to repot is when the plant starts new growth, usually right after it completes flowering. Orchid plants should be repotted when the potting mix breaks down, often evidenced by dead roots. A second reason to repot is when the plant is outgrowing the container. It may need to be divided or put in a larger container.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WATER?

It depends on your conditions. Plants should approach dryness before being watered. Enough water should be given so that it drains freely through the container. Never allow your orchid to sit in its own water.

WHAT ABOUT FERTILIZER?

Fertilizing will help a healthy plant grow better. However, no amount of fertilizer will help if the orchid does not have a healthy root system. It is easiest if you choose a fertilizer especially formulated for orchids. Water soluble fertilizers are readily available and easy to apply. There’s a saying, “feed weakly, weekly” that is appropriate for most orchids, so the rule of thumb is to fertilize every week with a diluted solution.
